I didn’t have many cravings with my second pregnancy, but do you know what sounded really good when the weather warmed up? Cold, creamy, extra-chocolatey chocolate milk. But after wearing a CGM and seeing how much refined sugars messed with my blood sugar, I knew that I needed something healthier than the corn-syrup laden stuff in the store.
Of course, even whole food sources of sugar (fruit, honey, real maple syrup, etc.) raised my blood sugar. However, they didn’t raise it as much as refined sources of sugar. And more importantly, I didn’t find myself hunting for more sugar after having some.
For my healthy chocolate milk, I blended whole milk, bananas, cocoa powder, and sea salt. So creamy, so chocolatey, so delicious! And even better, it’s packed with electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium) – all of which I desperately need when I’m so hot and sweaty!

Does this healthy chocolate milk taste like bananas?
It’s not overpowering, but I won’t lie. There is a bit of a banana flavor to this chocolate milk. But as someone who isn’t a big fan of bananas, it’s not enough to bother me! The cocoa powder does most of the heavy lifting flavor-wise and the sea salt helps to deepen that chocolate flavor.
Honestly, the banana gives this chocolate milk a wonderful creaminess that is very similar to the thickness of chocolate milk you might buy from the store or make with chocolate syrup!

Can I add anything to enhance this healthy chocolate milk?
I like to add a couple of scoops of unflavored collagen powder, which also adds just a bit of extra thickness and helps me sneak a bit more protein into my day. Feel free to add whatever supplements you want to incorporate, though I recommend only adding unflavored ones. Flavored protein powders or other supplements will change the flavor of this chocolate milk, potentially not for the best.

When is it good to drink this healthy chocolate milk?
This healthy chocolate milk is great any time, but because of the electrolytes, it’s an especially good drink after time outdoors on a hot day or after a workout as a recovery drink. If the kids have had a lot of fun running around and come in sweaty (and thirsty), this is a drink they’ll happily slurp down – they’ll never suspect that it’s healthy!
It’s also a great drink for pregnancy. With expanding maternal blood volume and the nutritional demands of the baby, electrolytes are even more important than usual. I also plan to make it on repeat in the late third trimester until I’m in labor so that there will be some in the fridge for me to drink, especially in early labor and after the baby is born!
How long is this healthy chocolate milk good for?
I make a big batch of this healthy chocolate milk and store it in a mason jar in the fridge for up to a week. However, make sure your milk is fresh! Using old milk will make this chocolate milk go bad much faster.

Ingredients
- 3 cups whole milk – a lower fat milk or an unsweetened milk alternative will work too, though it may be a bit less creamy.
- 2 ripe bananas – fresh or frozen will both work!
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder – feel free to add a bit more for a darker chocolate milk
- 1 tsp sea salt – deepens the chocolate flavor and provides electrolytes, so don’t skimp on it!
- Unflavored collagen peptides (optional) – adds a little protein boost, but not necessary!

Directions
Step 1: Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

Step 2: Pour and serve! Save any leftovers in a mason jar in the fridge for up to a week (as long as the milk is fresh).
